Home improvements – Insulate your home

Home insulation is one of the most important home improvements to invest in. Not only will insulating your home mean that you keep warmer and more comfortable but it also will save you money by reducing energy bills by cutting down your energy use and so benefit the environment as well.
•    Loft insulation – As heat rises insulating the loft stops all the heat from your house escaping through the roof. Many people had their lofts insulted with 100mm of insulation, but now it is recommended that this is topped up to 270mm. This can be dome as DIY but mineral wool can be messy and an expert will be quicker.
•    Cavity Wall insulation – most houses are built with a cavity of air. Insulation is pumped into the space and stops heat escaping through the walls. It is very effective at keeping heat in. Insulation may be mineral wool, beads or foam, and householders need expert advice on the appropriate insulation to use. Grants are often available for this work.
•    Energy Efficient Glazing – the value of double glazing (or secondary windows) is well known for keeping the heat in.
•    Draughtproofing.- Though houses do need to have some ventilation, stopping draughts is one of the easiest ways of preserving heat. There can be draughts under window frames or under doors, key holes and letterboxes, loft hatches or holes where pipework goes outside. Where draughts can be felt the gaps can then be plugged.
